scripting adobe products

Iolaire's day job involves among other things scripting Adobe Illustrator and InDesign to automatically generate real estate market reports. When you search Goggle or other sites for "scripting Adobe Illustrator" very few real results come up. This is very odd as the scripting capabilities of the Adobe Products are very powerful, especially when you are regularly creating similar documents. Just as with database driven websites, most publications which are updated regularly can benefit from automation. Therefore this area is designed to provide very short introduction to the resources available to learn how to script Adobe Products.

Any postings to my weblog relating to scripting Adobe products will be at: Map Scripting - my catch all for Adobe product scripting.

The best resources for scripting Adobe Products is the Adobe site but these days they are hiding the scripting information in the Adobe Solutions Network area. So here are your best sources for learning how to script scripting Adobe Products:

The first place to look when you have a problem:
Adobe's Scripting User to User Forum

But first grab your scripting documentation PDF with sample code and all of the scripting objects from:
InDesign Sample Scripts
InDesign Scripting Overview
Illustrator Scripting Documentation
Photoshop Scripting Documentation

There are only a few offsite examples:
Control Photoshop via Visual Basic and a web page Various Scripts for InDesign 2 and CS in Visual Basic

Also Olav Kvern's "Real World Adobe InDesign", published Peachpit Press, ISBN 0-201-77317-1 is often offered as a good source for learning how to script. There is another book: Scripting Adobe Illustrator by Ethan Wilde published by Adobe Press, ISBN: 0321112512 that is available but people do not mention it so I don't know how good it is.
